This is a photograph, NOT a painting

Camel Thorn Trees, Namibia

Photograph by Frans Lanting, National Geographic

‘Tinted orange by the morning sun, a soaring dune is the backdrop for the hulks of camel thorn trees in Namib-Naukluft Park.’

There’s NO QUESTION I would have lost money on a, ‘Is this a photo or painting?’ bet.

Santorum: what does McCain know about torture?

Via: Salon

John McCain has been on something of a crusade this week on the question of how we found Osama bin Laden, giving speeches and writing Op-Eds outlining his position that it was not torture of detainees that led the U.S. to its man.

Now comes presidential candidate and “enhanced interrogation” supporter Rick Santorum arguing on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show that McCain simply “doesn’t understand how enhanced interrogation works.”

Yes, he’s talking about the same John McCain who, in his FIVE and a HALF years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam, was  interrogated during a PROGRAM of BEATINGS and TOTURE.

my thoughts:

I’m sure Santourm is now going to try to ‘walk this back’, but I hope the Republicans who vote in the primaries and caucauses will not forget what he said about McCain.

I also believe, Santourm has to be one of the dumbest bastards who EVER seeked the office of President.

Gingrich and his ‘polling test’

Via: Wahisngton Post

“But maybe we should also have a voting standard that says to vote, as a native-born American, you should have to learn American history. You realize how many of our high school graduates, because of the decay of the educational system, couldn’t pass a citizenship test?”

In the post-Jim Crow America, does Gingrich imagine a literacy test would pass muster under the 15th Amendment?

Then there’s the Voting Rights Act. Oh, that.

Yes, that would be the federal legislation, amended in 1982 to provide: “No voting qualification or prerequisite to voting, or standard, practice, or procedure shall be imposed or applied by any State or political subdivision in a manner which results in a denial or abridgement of the right of any citizen of the United States to vote on account of race or color.” That might account for the complete absence of literacy tests as a condition of voting.

You’d expect this nonsense from Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.) or his son,  Rand Paul (R-Ky.), but Gingrich fancies himself as a conservative intellectual, a historian and a political innovator.

Actually, he’s ignorant about some basic historical facts and legal principles. The notion that he might be president has always seemed preposterous; actually, it’s downright scary.

‘Sample INS Citizenship Questions’

Immigrants have already passed this test.

I suggest the ‘native born Americans’ might want to take and PASS the test; not in order to vote, but simply because, they won’t be so damn dumb.

And YES, I’m talking about Professor Gingrich.

did YOU pass?

George Soros Dumps Nearly $800 MILLION in Gold

Via Huffington Post:

Billionaire financier George Soros, who called gold “the ultimate bubble,” dumped almost his entire $800 million stake in bullion in the first quarter, well before a commodities slump blamed partly on reports he was liquidating his holdings.

Famed gold bull John Paulson held his ground, but Soros was joined in the retreat by several other big names, including Eric Mindich and Paul Touradji, according to 13-F filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that provide the best insight into where hedge funds are placing their bets.

Soros, who has been bullish on gold in the past several years, cut his holdings in the SPDR Gold Trust (GLD.P: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) to just $6.9 million by the end of first quarter, compared with $655 million in December, becoming the most high-profile investors to turn his back on one of the market’s best-performing assets.

Soros or Beck?  – Beck or Soros? – Soros or Beck?

Jeez, that’s a tough one; but gotta go with Soros.
