Rome a statue of Pope John Paul II brings out the critics

Via: New York Times

The backdrop may be the Termini train station, but the chatter these days evokes a Damien Hirst opening. The object of the attention is a 17-foot-tall bronze sculpture of Pope John Paul II unveiled on May 18, his birthday

The verdict, at least as registered by the Italian news media and several online polls, is a merciless thumbs down.

The starkly spare sculpture by a Rome-based artist, Oliviero Rainaldi, depicts the pope condensed into a massive mantle as if to envelop the faithful. It has been alternately described as:

–  a sentry box

– a bell

–  a papal vespasiano, as Romans call a urinal.

(Vespasian was the first-century emperor who levied a tax on urine, which was used for tanning leather.)

The crescendo of outrage grew so rapidly that Rome’s traffic cops had to be deployed to keep a 24-hour watch to ward off potential vandalism until video cameras could be installed on surrounding lampposts.

Now, if the ‘Big One’ had hit Rome as predicted on May 11; ‘Direi che questo sarebbe stato uno di una pagina sei piani.’

Jewelry bill shapes Gingrich bid for Opal Office

Via: OregonLive (Oregonian)

Thursday, the hottest stock on the New York Stock Exchange was Tiffany’s. The New York jewelry company announced that its income was up 25 percent, and it raised its projections for the rest of the year.
It just shows you what a Newt Gingrich endorsement can do.

Last week, the former House speaker’s presidential campaign hit a shiny snag when word got out that at one point, he owed as much as $500,000 — on a no-interest charge account — to Tiffany’s. Political insiders have speculated that Gingrich wanted to look nice for the Iowa caucuses.

It was the company’s most prominent public impact since Audrey Hepburn starred in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” Newt, it seems, has been having all his meals there.

This week, we learned that Tiffany’s lobbying spending on “mining law and mine permitting-related issues,” under the jurisdiction of the Agriculture Committee, went up sharply during the time Callista Gingrich was chief clerk of the committee.

It also turned out that Gingrich’s former chief aide when he was speaker now works for the lobbying company employed by Tiffany’s.

Rep. Steven Palazzo (R-MS) – ‘GOP Moran of the Day’

Via: Capital Hill Blues

Remember all those grand promises by the tea party-backed Republicans who promised to put an end to wasteful spending and pork-barrel earmarks?

Just more hypocritical political posturing.

While talking the big plan to be fiscally responsible the Republican freshmen have packed a huge $553 billion spending bill with millions of pet defense projects for their home districts.

Yep. Pork barrel is still alive in the halls of Congress and the pigs at the trough are the ones voters sent to Washington to end the wasteful practice.

Of course, Republicans claim the money for the projects aren’t pork. Of course not. Pork is when the money is spent by the other guys in someone else’s district. If it’s in your own district it’s necessary.

Palazzo’s slice of the fat-ass pig:

Republican Steven Palazzo used anti-pork barrel spending rhetoric and tea party backing to beat Democratic conservative Gene Taylor in Mississippi.

– He added $10 million to buy land to expand a National Guard facility in his district

– and another $19.9 million to “ship preliminary design and feasibility studies” at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula — also part of his district.

Will the teabaggers in his district, or ANY district for thast matter, care about the $29.9 million extra, which was not, I repeat NOT, in the Defense Department budget?

Oh hell no, as long as it’s not ‘pork’ for: education, clean energy, health care, FEMA, . . .
