Arthur Summerfield, U.S. Postmaster General, 1959

QUOTE: “Before man reaches the moon, your mail will be delivered within hours from New York to Australia by guided missiles. We stand on the threshold of rocket mail.”

Arthur Ellsworth Summerfield (Pinconning, Michigan, 17 March 1899 – 26 April 1972 in West Palm Beach, Florida) was a U.S. political figure.

He ran (unsuccessfully) for the governorship of his home state of Michigan in 1946 and served as the chairman of the Republican National Committee between 1952 and 1953.

At the 1952 Republican National Convention he played a key role in winning the GOP presidential nomination for General Dwight Eisenhower. As Michigan’s delegate chairman Summerfield convinced the large, uncommitted Michigan delegation to support Eisenhower, thus providing “Ike” with a major boost before the voting.

As a reward for his support, in December 1952 President-Elect Eisenhower chose Summerfield as the federal Postmaster General; he served in that post from 1953 to 1961.

As postmaster general, he oversaw the United States Postal Service’s brief experiment with rocket-delivered mail, a flirtation that crystallized into reality for the only time as “missile mail” with the 8 June 1959 launch of a letter-stuffed Regulus cruise missile from the USS Barbero, a submarine of the United States Navy.

Rocket mail is the delivery of mail by rocket or missile. The rocket would land by deploying an internal parachute upon arrival. It has been attempted by various organizations in many different countries, with varying levels of success.

It has never become widely seen as being a viable option for delivering mail (really?), due to the cost of the schemes and numerous failures.

The collection of philatelic material (“stamps”) used for (and depicting) rocket mail is a specialist branch of ‘aero’philately known as ‘astro’philately.

The Lisa Simpson Book Club

The Lisa Simpson Book Club is tracking down every instance of Lisa reading in the Simpsons and making a record of what books she’s read.

‘The Bart Simpson Story’; that’s right, my favorite.

“All I want is a piece of ass”; from yet another happy couple

Via: Smoking Gun

“All I want is a piece of ass, is that too much to ask for?”

That’s what Melissa Minarsich said to police last night when they arrived at her Iowa City home in response to a call of a “female out of control.” As detailed by Minarsich, 28, she got into an altercation with her boyfriend “because he would not have sex with her.”

Which prompted Minarsich’s pointed remark to cops about her desire for “ass.”

According to a criminal complaint, Minarsich smelled of booze and had slurred speech when interviewed by Iowa City Police Department officers. Her boyfriend–with whom she has an eight-month-old child–told cops when he told Minarsich “he wouldn’t sleep with her she became upset and swung at him.” Minarsich “landed a couple of blows,” but the man was not injured, police noted.

Minarsich was booked into the Johnson County jail on a misdemeanor domestic assault charge (she was convicted in June 2009 on a similar count).

Suzi Schmidt (R-IL) – ‘GOP Moron of the Day’

Via: Daily Herald

Editor’s note: The 911 audio tapes have been edited to remove personal  identification information.

State Sen. Suzi Schmidt mentioned being a former Lake County Board chairman  and her “connections” on a December call asking a 911 dispatcher to ignore her  husband if he summoned help, according to a recording released Wednesday.

Monday’s call was the THIRD sheriff’s response to the couple’s Lake Villa  Township house since Dec. 25, 2010. Authorities also didn’t seek criminal  charges based on the domestic violence complaints from last December or Aug.  16.

Robert Schmidt declined to comment. Suzi Schmidt didn’t return calls, but  issued a statement late Wednesday afternoon that, in part, addressed the use of  her political status on the 911 recordings.

“On the 911 call, I identified myself — but I NEVER intended to  inappropriately use my title. However, I apologize if any of my comments during  this very emotional time seem inappropriate,” she said.

Suzi Schmidt, elected to a 2-year state senate term in 2010, called a 911  dispatcher at 9:55 a.m. Dec. 25 because she believed her husband soon would be  doing the same.

“Hi Allison, this is Suzi Schmidt. {Did I mention?}, I was the Lake County Board chairman for  10 years,” she said on the 911 recording obtained through a Freedom of  Information Act request. “Listen, I’m having a little problem with my husband  right now.”

“Like a domestic-type problem?” the dispatcher inquired.

Suzi Schmidt said all was fine at the home (outside the front door, not  so good), then provided some detail on what  she wanted from the 911 dispatcher.

“If he calls, Bob Schmidt, you can ignore him.

Of COURSE, I just caught him with another woman, so that’s why I’m a little upset,” she said.

Suzi Schmidt, 60, said she locked out her husband on that frigid Christmas Day and that’s why he might try to seek help from police.

“He might (call), except he’s kind of afraid of me because he knows I have connections,” she told the emergency dispatcher.
