Happy Birthday Ms Monroe!

Via: First Time User

Norma Jeane Mortensen Baker (June 1, 1926 – August 5, 1962), professionally recognized as Marilyn Monroe, was an American actress, model, and singer, who became a major sex symbol, starring in a number of commercially successful motion pictures during the 1950s and early 1960s.

After spending much of her childhood in foster homes, Monroe began a career as a model, which led to a film contract in 1946 with Twentieth Century-Fox.

Steve Smith (R-PA) – ‘GOP Moron of the Day’

Via: Think Progress

Republicans in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania have elected Steve Smith, a lifelong white supremacist with close ties to neo-Nazi groups and groups like Aryan Nations, to the county’s GOP Committee.

The elections, which took place in late April, were certified by the committee two weeks ago, and Smith notified supporters of his victory last week by posting a message to the online forum White News Now.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has documented Smith’s participation with known skinhead organizations like Keystone State Skinheads, (now Keystone United) which he co-founded in 2001. And his racist activism extends far beyond violent rhetoric as well, into actual violence:

In March 2003, he and two other KSS members were arrested in Scranton for beating up Antoni Williams, a black man, using stones and chunks of pavement. Smith pleaded guilty to terrorist threats and ethnic intimidation and received a 60-day sentence and probation.

Smith is also an active member of local Tea Party groups, a network that he used to gain support for his bid for the committee seat. According to the SPLC, Smith referred to the Tea Party as “fertile grounds for our activists.”

Luzerne County is hardly a small rural county either. According to the 2010 census, over 320,000 people live in Luzerne, many in the county seat of Wilkes-Barre, a large city of over 40,000 people. And in an interesting juxtaposition with the election of an anti-immigrant bigot, Luzerne County saw the nation’s largest county-level

personal thought:

Q: Will Steve Smith give the GOP keynote address in Tampa on August 27?

A: I suspect if the Tebagger/Aryan wingnuts have their way, he just might.

California Mayor Gives This Chinese Autograph Seeker a Piece of His Mind

Via: Wonkette

Santee, California Mayor Randy Voepel, according to the local Patch, recently received an email from a Chinese fellow (see photo) who collects autographs asking for a contribution from Voepel.

The email sort of resemnbles “spam email,” but we’re only saying that because we’re racist.

But instead of deleting the email or not responding or, well, sending him the autograph he requested, Voepel decided to write back to the commie calling him a dirty commie, and more generally instructing him to fuck off.

Here is the nice autograph request from Mao Zedong, or whatever his name is.

Dear Mayor:

As a great city/county of the United States, your city/county must be playing an important role to make the U.S. a prosperous county.

Your city/county has charitable conventions compared to other states, which I have seen in many TV programs. You city/county is attractive economically and democratically, these can’t not be achieved without your governance, which I am very interested in.

I’d like to have a signed photo of yours and the seal of your city/county, so I can keep them as souvenirs, can you help me?

Wish you the best

Sincerely yours

Deng zhi yong

Annnnnnnnnd the response from Voepel, who, for what it’s worth, left the Republican party a couple of years ago because it was too liberal for him.

Dear Mr. Yong,

I respectfully decline to cooperate in any way with what I consider to be an enemy of the United States. The People’s Republic of China is a repressive and evil communist regime that runs a Police State. I fought in Vietnam to stop communism and will fight communism until the day I die. Please accept me as a very determined enemy, as I assume you to be to me.

Best Capitalist regards,

Randy Voepel

Mayor, The freedom and human rights City of Santee

The spammer probably has his credit card information now.

{Hey, you can only hope.}

U.K. – banned ads

Via: Huffington Post

We like to joke that the U.K.’s Advertising Standards Agency is an old-fashioned complaint department, acting as a sympathetic ear to a small handful of pearl-clutching Brits.

But it turns out the agency, which specializes in banning (potentially) offensive ads, has fielded about 431,100 complaints in its 50-year history — that’s a lot of pearl-clutching. So which fashion ad has ignited the most controversy over the years?

Look no further than the ASA’s newly-released annual report, in which the agency happily reports its “top ten most complained about ads of all time.” There, nestled among the scaremongering PSAs and violent car adverts, is Sophie Dahl’s famous ad for Yves Saint Laurent Opium perfume, which made a splash back in 2000.

(1 of 2) Contest! What Is This Official George W. Bush White House Portrait Missing?

Via: Wonkette

Did we all have a good time watching Dubya make some funneez at the White House today?

It was pretty good! He was all like, haha, you know and I know and everybody knows that I was pretty much the worst at being the preznit, for reals, hilares, just Mr. Jokey Jokey about what a terrible job he did.

He’s somehow easier to take out of office than he was in, no?

But enough about that!

Please get out your MSPaint, because we feel this portrait is just missing … something. Couldn’t say what, because then you would just steal it, and we would get 470 pictures of GWB with his cock in his hand, and we do not want to see that. The contest will be open until 5 p.m. Friday. Winners get nothing, as per usual. Send to tips@wonkette.com with the subject line “This is not a portrait of George W. Bush with his cock in his hand.”

From the Comments:

– His codpiece enhanced flight suit?

– His brother JarJar?

– Needs more flying shoes.

– A good legacy, but I don’t think you can photoshop that.

– Shouldn’t puppet-master Cheney’s hand be up his ass?

(2 0f 2) will be forthcoming.

Senate furniture (see photo) stolen and sold illegally, report says

Via: Washington Post

The U.S. Senate is out of town this week, and somebody may want to make sure its furniture is safe and secure.

An employee assigned to care for furniture used by Senate offices stole and illegally sold more than $13,700 worth of tables and chairs to a used furniture dealer in Virginia, according to a new watchdog report and people familiar with the investigation.

The employee worked for the Architect of the Capitol, the office responsible for maintenance, landscaping and renovations at the U.S. Capitol and adjoining congressional buildings. A report released this week by the AOC inspector general provided limited details of the illegal sale.

On three  separate occasions (THREE OCCASIONS!) between October 2010 and August 2011, the report said the employee used an AOC vehicle to transport the stolen furniture and sell it to a used furniture store.

The employee, who RESIGNED his position one day before he was set to be FIRED, sold the furniture to a used furniture store in Virginia, according to two people familiar with the investigation who asked not to be identified for fear of retribution. The pieces were not considered valuable  (that’s right, ONLY $13,700) antiques, and were mostly excess office furniture previously used in Senate offices, the sources said.

AOC Inspector General Carol Bates declined to provide further details of the case Wednesday, because the employee’s decision to resign didn’t require AOC to take formal disciplinary action. In her report, Bates said federal prosecutors in Washington declined to press charges in the case because of the AOC’s lax security and furniture inventory system.

AOC spokeswoman Eva Malecki previously declined to comment on the case.

“$13,700 here, $13,700 there, and pretty soon you’re talking real money”, the late Senator Everett Dirksen (R-IL) didn’t say.

Oklahoma Doctor Refuses to Provide Emergency Contraceptive to RAPE VICTIM on Basis of Religious Conscience

Via: The Raw Story

An Oklahoma mother brought her daughter to a local hospital after she was raped only to be turned away and refused help by a doctor, purportedly because the hospital lacked the staff to properly process the victim’s claims and injuries. Welcome to the reality of processing sexual assault crimes in GOP-land.

The woman and her daughter were reportedly turned away because the hospital did not have any nurses who conduct rape exams on staff. Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) are specially trained professionals who deal only with the delicate process of conducting rape exams. The SANE program is coordinated through the YWCA and is a collaboration with local law enforcement, the Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office and public health officials. The collaborative effort is designed to ensure evidence is properly collected and stored without re-traumatizing the victim and ensuring the most effective prosecution of the perpetrator possible

In this case the doctor involved refused to conduct any exam, nor would he dispense any emergency contraception. The hospital issued a statement grounding those decisions in the need to coordinate through the SANE program. It could also be that this doctor had a moral objection to treating rape victims and dispensing emergency contraception, and thanks to abusive expanses of the conscience-clause by the right, simply refused to deal with her. Either way it’s a lose-lose for rape victims who now face the prospect of looking for treatment after an assault only to be turned away because of a lack of resources or because of religious objections.

The young woman asked the doctor whether or not emergency contraceptives were available and whether the doctor was simply refusing to provide them. The nurse told her “I will not give you emergency contraceptives because it goes against my belief.” The doctor refused to help her, even though she had just been raped, and refused to find another doctor to help her.
