1962 – ‘Son of a Shoemaker, Becomes a Shoemaker’

1

My Dad was my HERO.

Because I wanted to be like him, I also became a construction engineer.

I know my Dad was proud of his ‘shoemaker son’, but he unfortunately died a few months after I got into the biz.

Not only did he inspire me to do the job I loved, but he instilled the LOVE of travel; and for both, I will be forever grateful.

I honestly don’t know if there is an ‘after-life’, but I know if he and I can ‘hook-up’, we’ll first talk of family, and then do a whole lotta ‘shop-talk’, and then we’ll talk travel.

Photo: My Dad is on the Left. This was from the lead story from the Number One trade magazine for the engineering/construction market, ‘Engineering News Record’.

My ‘Old Man’, and I do mean OLD, would have been 104-years-old, today, September 12th.

Happy Birthday, Dad!

Suriya the orangutan is a helper at heart.

Here she is lending a hand at the Myrtle Beach Safari park in South Carolina. The 9-year-old ape just loves to feed fish to her penguin pals.

I know he’s a little daffy and I don’t what the hell that thing is on top of his head, but we need someone to take the throne of Bovine Scatology” (Govenor Romney, remember him? Or, how about John McCain? George W. Bush?).

John Collier, Jr. was born in 1913, the youngest son of Lucy Wood Collier and John Collier, Sr. His father was a social activist who later served as the Commissioner of Indian Affairs from 1933 to 1945 and, because of this work, the family maintained ties to the area around Taos, New Mexico. In the 1930s, John Collier, Jr. established a home in this area.

In 1941 to 1943, Collier worked as a photographer with the Farm Securities Administration and the Office of War Information under Roy Stryker and documented many areas around the eastern U.S and northern New Mexico.
