Marlin Stutzman (R-IN) – ‘GOP Moron of the Day’

1

House Republicans are continuing to play hardball in negotiations over the spending bill that precipitated the government shutdown on Oct. 1, apparently out of fear that compromise would weaken their power.

WE’RE NOT GOING TO BE DISRESPECTED, Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-Ind.) told The Washington Examiner. “We have to get something out of this. AND I DON’T KNOW WHAT THAT EVEN IS.”

The happiest place on earth just got a little happier.

Walt Disney Co. announced on Wednesday that it is offering full-time employment to the 427 part-time employees at its Disney World theme park in Orlando, Florida who work at least 30 hours per week — the threshold at which the Affordable Care Act requires large employers with 50 or more workers to offer basic health benefits to employees or risk paying a $2,000 per employee fine after the first 30 workers.

Disney already offers a level of health coverage that is acceptable under Obamacare to its full-time employees. But part-time workers, including those who work at the 30-hour cutoff set by the health law, receive more limited benefits. Instead of rolling back these workers’ hours to avoid expanding their health coverage, Disney is choosing to promote them to full-time status.

“Disney wants to be proactive,” said Ed Chambers, president of the Service Trades Council union that represents tens of thousands of Orlando Disney employees, in an interview with Bloomberg News. “Disney is way out in front on this.”

(2 of 2) I’m working, I’ll continue to be paid.” – Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah)

1

As hundreds of thousands of federal workers continue to be impacted by government shutdown furloughs, Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) has no intention of losing his paycheck.

In a recent interview with KUTV-TV obtained by BuzzFeed, LEE was ADAMANT that despite dozens of his colleagues deferring or donating pay, he would not follow suit.

“I’m working,” Lee told KUTV. “I’ll continue to be paid.”

(1 of 2) Shutdown locks 30 kids with cancer out of treatment programs per week

1

Via: Raw Story

Each week that Republican politicians refuse to end the shutdown of the federal government results in 200 cancer patients being unable to enroll in treatment programs at the National Institutes of Health, 30 of them children. According to the Atlantic, the number came from a Wall Street Journal article with an interview with NIH director Francis Collins.

“At the National Institutes of Health,” said the Journal, “nearly three-quarters of the staff was furloughed. One result: director Francis Collins said about 200 patients who otherwise would be admitted to the NIH Clinical Center into clinical trials each week will be turned away. This includes about 30 children, most of them cancer patients, he said.”

Brad Plumer at the Washington Post reported that the NIH Clinical Center is often the last hope of very ill patients.
