Louisiana Thinks Funding School Run By ‘Apostle And Prophet’ Is Somehow Constitutional

Via: Wonkette

Louisiana’s exciting experiment in public-school vouchers is steaming forward, providing parents and children with educational excellence and traditional values, hooray!

But that’s not all!

It’s also an excellent lesson in how the free market can improve education, by taking taxpayer funds from the wasteful public schools and handing it to efficient private schools run by religious loons, just the way Real America wants.

Among the 119 voucher schools approved so far is New Orleans’ Light City Christian Academy, founded and run by Apostle Leonard Lucas.

The state’s voucher program will be sending this gentleman, who “walks in the fullness of his calling and wears the mantle of an Apostle and Prophet,” some $364,000 to educate 80 students ($364,000 / 80 = $4,550).

STUDY: Middle Class Suffered ‘Worst Decade In Modern History’ As Wages Stagnated, Share Of Income Fell

Via: Think Progress

The middle class is shrinking, and so is its share of America’s income and wage growth, according to a new study released Thursday.

The study from the Pew Research Center found that the middle class — defined as Americans with incomes between $39,000 and $118,000 — fell backward in income for the first time since the end of World War II, and the number of Americans who fit into that category shrunk from 61 percent in 1971 to just 51 percent in 2011.

The share of income that went to the middle class also fell during the first decade of the 21st century, a 10-year period that featured two damaging recessions, including the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, and a major housing crisis.

The share of income that went to the wealthiest Americans, however, has grown substantially since 1970, as the Washington Post notes:

In 1970, the share of U.S. income:

middle class – 62 percent

upper income – 29 percent

~

But by 2010, the share of U.S. income:

middle class – 45 percent

upper income – 46 percent

Gallup Poll – ‘ONE in FIVE’ Americans Can’t Afford Food

Via: Huffington Post

Another sign that the economy is not recovering quickly enough: A significant number of Americans are still having trouble affording food.

According to Gallup, nearly ONE in FIVE Americans say they didn’t have enough money to pay for food at times this year.

The poll results, based on the responses of nearly 180,000 American adults, were gathered through various surveys conducted from January through June.

Americans in southern states were the most likely to have a hard time buying groceries, while residents of the Mountain Plains and Midwest regions had the least trouble, Gallup found. Census data from 2011 showed that poverty rates rose the most in the South from 2009 to 2010, as compared to other regions in the United States.

GOP official 2012 platform – no exception for RAPE and INCEST survivors

Via: Huffington Post

Lost in the national outrage and politics following an inflammatory statement made Sunday by GOP Senate candidate Todd Akin in Missouri is the reality that, on a fundamental level, there is NO POLICY difference between Akin’s comments and the mainstream GOP platform.‬

CNN reported on Monday that the draft of the GOP’s official 2012 platform calls for a federal ban on abortion with no exception for rape and incest survivors the same policy Akin was trying to defend when he asserted that victims of “legitimate rape” have a natural bodily mechanism that prevents them from getting pregnant.

Todd Akin (R-MO) – ‘GOP Moron of the Day’

Via: Washington Post

Rep. Todd Akin, the newly-christened GOP Senate nominee in Missouri, said in an interview airing Sunday that “legitimate rape” rarely causes pregnancy.

Explaining his no-exceptions policy on abortions, Akin was asked why he opposes abortion even when the pregnancy is the result of rape.

“First of all, from what I understand from doctors, (pregnancy from rape) is really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV in a clip posted to YouTube by the Democratic super PAC American Bridge. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) – ‘GOP Moron of the Day’

Via: Raw Story

Soledad O’Brien: “At the end of the day, that same number crunching was voted on by virtually every single Republican in 2011 and then again in 2012. That is fair to say,” O’Brien pointed out, adding that both Romney and Ryan had promised to “save” Medicare by turning it into a “voucher program.”

Chaffetz: “No, it’s not!”

O’Brien: “It’s not a voucher program?”

Chaffetz: “It is not a voucher program. It is a premium support, and that is totally different than a voucher program. And every time somebody says, ‘Oh, it’s a voucher program,’ it’s false, it’s misleading, it’s derogatory and it’s inaccurate. That is not what it does.”

O’Brien: “You will give people money to go and buy their own insurance, right? But we’re arguing over symantics. At the end of the day, isn’t it — you would give someone money to buy their own insurance.”

Chafffetz: “No, a premium support program is different than a voucher program.”

O’Brien: “Walk me through how it’s different.”

Chaffetz: “Because some people that have maybe more needs or medical needs or they have less income, they’re going to have more flexibility and more assets to go and do what they need to do in order to have some choice and flexibility and create competition in the marketplace.”

O’Brien: “Which is they get a VOUCHER TO GO BUY SOMETHING!”.

personal thought:

SENIORS: I think the proposed $8,000 per year ‘premium support program’ VOUCHER might be enough IF you remain healthy.

However, IF you have a chronic condition, or say you need a by-pass or hip replacement, you are absolutely f*cked!

Q: Let’s say you have a pre-existing condition (heart diesease, diabetes, etc, etc) what comany in their right mind would insure you?

A: No company will, and you will be UN-INSURED!

77 Years After It Became Law, Social Security Keeps 20 MILLION Americans Out Of Poverty

Via: Think Progress

Today marks the 77th anniversary of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signing the Social Security Act into law, creating arguably America’s most successful social program.

“We can never insure one hundred percent of the population against one hundred percent of the hazards and vicissitudes of life, but we have tried to frame a law which will give some measure of protection to the average citizen and to his family against the loss of a job and against poverty-ridden old age.”

– President Franklin Delano Roosevelt – August 14, 1935

REAGAN Budget Adviser Blasts Paul Ryan’s Budget As An ‘Empty Fairy Tale’

Via: Think Progress

Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan’s budget — which gives massive tax breaks to corporations and the wealthiest Americans, drastically slashes funding for social programs, decimates state budgets, and still ends up ultimately raising the deficit — has garnered critics ranging from Catholic bishops to top economists.

Yesterday, former President Reagan’s budget adviser, David Stockman, added his voice to the dissent.

Stockman, who was the director of the Office of Management and Budget during the Reagan administration, blasted Ryan’s budget as an “empty conservative sermon” and “fairy tale” in an op-ed published in the New York Times:

The Ryan Plan boils down to a fetish for cutting the top marginal income-tax rate for “job creators” — i.e. the superwealthy — to 25 percent and paying for it with an as-yet-undisclosed plan to broaden the tax base.

Of the $1 trillion in so-called tax expenditures that the plan would attack, the vast majority would come from slashing popular tax breaks:

1. employer-provided health insurance

2. mortgage interest

3.  401(k) accounts

4. state and local taxes

5. charitable giving and the like

6. low rates on capital gains and dividends.

…In short, Mr. Ryan’s plan is devoid of credible math or hard policy choices.

And it couldn’t pass even if Republicans were to take the presidency and both houses of Congress.

~

Mr. Romney and Mr. Ryan have NO PLAN to take on Wall Street, the Fed, the military-industrial complex, social insurance or the nation’s fiscal calamity and no plan to revive capitalist prosperity — just empty sermons (yeah, but I thought the teabaggers like white, male, Christian, ’empty sermons’?).
