Republicans Blast Nevada Rancher for Failing to Use Commonly Accepted Racial Code Words

Via: The Borowitz Report – New Yorker

Republican politicians blasted the Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy on Thursday for making flagrantly racist remarks instead of employing the subtler racial code words the G.O.P. has been using for decades.

“We Republicans have worked long and hard to develop insidious racial code words like ‘entitlement society’ and ‘personal responsibility,’ ” said Sen. Rand Paul (R-Kentucky). “There is no excuse for offensive racist comments like the ones Cliven Bundy made when there are so many subtler ways of making the exact same point.”

Fox News also blasted the rancher, saying in a statement, “Cliven Bundy’s outrageous racist remarks undermine decades of progress in our effort to come up with cleverer ways of saying the same thing.”

Q: So Reince, once again we ask how is that ‘rebranding’ working out for ya, bud?

The body-count of laissez-faire economics

Via: Mock, Paper, Scissors

Let’s be real: the explosion at the fertilizer factory was completely preventable.

If Grover Norquist and his ilk were not so busy trying to starve the beast and bathtub-drown it for the 1%, there might have been some reasonable inspections that would have at least warned people that this was likely to happen.

Instead, over the past five years, exactly six fertilizer plants have been inspected. There are many more explosions waiting to happen. How is this possible, you ask?

In the US, there are more than 170 companies making 70,000 different chemicals, totaling $750 billion revenue, and so it only seems logical that Congress funded $10.5M for inspections. You can do the math. It is beyond preposterous.

And of course, we should thank Chimpy for the miracle of self-regulation and reporting that is supposed to make up the difference.

As for Texas, well, what kind of zoning laws would allow a bomb-making plant (remember, chemical fertilizers were part of the swords to plough shares at the end of WWII, but the industry really did result from bomb making) in a populated downtown, walking distance to the hospital and elementary school, and with several senior housing facilities also in the radius of the blast?

It all adds up to a perfect storm of Ayn Rand style selfishness and greed, and now it has a body count.

Ayn Rand Paul (R-KY) – ‘GOP Moron of the Day’

Via: Huffington Post

The Senate has turned back an effort by Kentucky Republican Rand Paul to DRASTICALLY CUT food stamp spending and replace the food aid program with block grants to the states (Oh, I don’t know, lets say, Kentucky?).

The 65-33 vote to defeat the Paul amendment was part of debate on a five-year, half-trillion-dollar farm and food bill.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or food stamps, makes up about $80 billion of the $100 billion a year cost of the farm bill, providing aid to some 46 million people.

The farm bill would reduce food stamp spending by $4 billion over the next decade by eliminating abuses. Paul’s amendment would have saved $322 billion over the same period by capping spending at $45 billion a year and turning over funding decisions to the states.

Libertarian Billionaire Wants Island Nation for Libertarian Billionaires

Via: Wonkette

It is possible that if we too had billions of dollars, we might set fire to a few million of it every day for fun and “good form” or however it is appropriate to celebrate exorbitant wealth these days.

But eccentric Silicon Valley tycoon Peter Thiel will do everybody one better and use a little of that billionaire barbecue tinder pile to the tune of $1.25 million to fund an adorable lunatic venture proposing to build an island nation of PAULTARDS “oil-rig style” somewhere off the coast of San Francisco/ wherever.

“Will there be Internet forums?”

Oh, uh, probably!

The organization behind this blockbuster premise is called the Seasteading Institute, a group that devotes itself to arguing on its Wiki about what kind of man-made island would be most likely to live up to Ayn Rand’s paradisiac vision of total lawlessness while trying to avoid tsunami death. No one claimed libertarian utopia was easy.

From thr Lookout:

‘Thiel has been a big backer of the Seasteading Institute, which seeks to build sovereign nations on oil rig-like platforms to occupy waters beyond the reach of law-of-the-sea treaties. The idea is for these countries to start from scratch – free from the laws, regulations, and moral codes of any existing place. Details says the experiment would be “a kind of floating petri dish for implementing policies that libertarians, stymied by indifference at the voting booths, have been unable to advance: no welfare, looser building codes, no minimum wage, and few restrictions on weapons.’

We’re sending out a request today asking President Obama to put a MORATOURIUM on ALL REGULATIONS,” Perry said on WHO radio in Iowa, recorded live by ThinkProgress.

Under such a moratorium:

– the Food and Drug Administration would stop approving new drugs and preventing human experimentation

– the USDA would stop checking for food safety

– the EPA would stop monitoring for poisons in drinking water

– the Library of Congress would stop loaning materials to blind people

– the NTSB would stop investigating airplane accidents

– HHS would end Medicare payments

– no more patents, copyrights, or trademarks would be issued

– DHS would stop protecting chemical facilities from terrorist attacks

– the Treasury would stop printing currency

– financial sanctions on hostile nations like North Korea and Iran would end

– the Federal Reserve System would shut down
