“Quote of the Day”

Via: The Borowitz Report

1

A riveting scene unfolded in Congress today as a tearful Speaker John Boehner took to the floor of the House to tell his colleagues,

“I don’t want to live in a world where seven million people get affordable health care.”

Tears streaming down his cheeks, Rep. Boehner appeared unable to maintain his composure as he delivered a speech interrupted by blubbering and sharp intakes of breath.

“What kind of a world is it where anyone can go on the Internet and get health care they can afford?” he said. “Not a world I’d care to live in, or leave to my children.”

“It’s not right… and it’s not America,” he said, breaking down.

Later, dabbing his eyes, a still-sobbing Boehner apologized to reporters for “losing it up there.”

“I don’t like to get so emotional,” he said. “But when seven million people signed up for Obamacare, a part of me died.”

“Quote of the Day”

Via: Daily Kos

If what he said in 1996 is any guide, House Speaker John Boehner really, really does not plan to allow a VOTE on raising the minimum wage:

“I’ll commit suicide before I vote on a clean minimum-wage bill,” Boehner, then the head of the House Republican Conference, said at the time.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/02/21/1279272/-Boehner-I-ll-commit-suicide-before-I-vote-on-a-clean-minimum-wage-bill#

***

Through early morning fog I see
Visions of the things to be
The pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see…

That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

The game of life is hard to play
I’m gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I’ll someday lay
So this is all I have to say

Suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn’t hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger…watch it grin, but…

Suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

A brave man once requested me
To answer questions that are key
Is it to be or not to be
And I replied ‘oh why ask me?’

And suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

…and you can do the same thing if you please

“Let’s NOT Make a Deal” – Krugman

Via: NYT

To say the obvious: Democrats won an amazing victory. Not only did they hold the White House despite a still-troubled economy, in a year when their Senate majority was supposed to be doomed, they actually added seats.

*

But one goal eluded the victors. Even though preliminary estimates suggest that Democrats received somewhat more votes than Republicans in Congressional elections, the G.O.P. retains solid control of the House thanks to extreme gerrymandering by courts and Republican-controlled state governments. And Representative John Boehner, the speaker of the House, wasted no time in declaring that his party remains as intransigent as ever, utterly opposed to any rise in tax rates even as it whines about the size of the deficit.

So President Obama has to make a decision, almost immediately, about how to deal with continuing Republican obstruction.

How far should he go in accommodating the G.O.P.’s demands?

My answer is, not far at all.

Mr. Obama should hang tough, declaring himself willing, if necessary, to hold his ground even at the cost of letting his opponents inflict damage on a still-shaky economy. And this is definitely no time to negotiate a “grand bargain” on the budget that snatches defeat from the jaws of victory.

In saying this, I don’t mean to minimize the very real economic dangers posed by the so-called fiscal cliff (see photo) that is looming at the end of this year if the two parties can’t reach a deal. Both the Bush-era tax cuts and the Obama administration’s payroll tax cut are set to expire, even as automatic spending cuts in defense and elsewhere kick in thanks to the deal struck after the 2011 confrontation over the debt ceiling.

And the looming combination of tax increases and spending cuts looks easily large enough to push America back into recession.

Nobody wants to see that happen. Yet it may happen all the same, and Mr. Obama has to be willing to let it happen if necessary.

personal thought:

I know it won’t happen, but it still would be nice to see Paul Krugman as the new Treasury Secretary.

Common sense, AND back-bone, would be welcomed.

With Gas Prices Expected To Drop Below $3, Republicans Suddenly Silent On Obama’s Role

Via: Huffington Post

Experts predict average gas prices may fall below $3 this fall after dropping 14 cents in two weeks.

When prices hit a record high, Republicans attributed sole responsibility to President Obama, even though there is no evidence that factors like drilling impact what consumers pay.

Just two months ago, Republicans said Obama shouldered the blame for rising gas costs, and that only he had the “key” to lower gas prices:

Mitt Romney, March 18, 2012: “He gets full credit or blame for what’s happened in this economy, and what’s happened to gasoline prices under his watch, and what’s happened to our schools, and what’s happened to our military forces. All these things are his responsibility while he’s president.”

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH), April 6, 2012: “The president holds the key to addressing the pain Ohioans are feeling at the gas pump and moving our nation away from its reliance on foreign energy. My question for the president is: what are you waiting for?

Boehner, April 6, 2012: “The president’s own policies to date have made matters worse and driven up gas prices.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Feb. 28 2012: “This President will go to any length to drive up gas prices and pave the way for his ideological agenda.”

Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY), March 13, 2012: Obama is “fully responsible for what the American public is paying for gasoline.”

~~~
Q: Are Republicans now reversing their rhetoric and giving Obama credit for falling gas prices?
A: Oh, hell NO!
personal thought:
I think the President had very little control when the prices rise; nor is he responsible for the drop.
With that said, I do like the timing.
Boner, Boehner, whatever; wages WAR on the Catholic Church!
Via: Huffington Post
House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) chastised Catholic bishops at a Wednesday news conference on Capitol Hill, saying they needed to look at the bigger picture after they complained that the GOP budget plan fails to meet “moral criteria.”
The bishops had written letters to Capitol Hill, arguing many elements of the Republicans’ budget proposal, such as cuts to food stamps, harmed the poor while the wealthy benefitted.
“At a time of great competition for agricultural resources and budgetary constraints, the needs of those who are hungry, poor and vulnerable should come before assistance to those who are relatively well off and powerful,” stated one of the letters.
“Just solutions … must require shared sacrifice by all, including raising adequate revenues, eliminating unnecessary military and other spending, and fairly addressing the long-term costs of health insurance and retirement programs. The House-passed budget resolution fails to meet these moral criteria,” they declared in another document.
~
Boehner, who is a Catholic, acknowledged the bishops’ moral authority but suggested their focus was too narrow as they scolded Republicans over cutting assistance to those who are poor, hungry and homeless.
“I want (DEMAND?) them to take a bigger look,” Boehner said.
‘GOP Morons of the DAY’ – ALL of them!
Via: Think Progress
***
House Republicans have seen their unfavorable rating skyrocket to 64 percent, as the public lays blame for ugly partisan battles over the debt ceiling and payroll tax holiday, among other things, at their feet.
Republicans started 2011 with a 43 percent favorable rating and 46 percent unfavorable rating. The precipitous drop was a subject at a recent House GOP retreat in Baltimore earlier this month.
***
Continuing to avoid their pledge to focus on jobs, Congressional Republicans are moving toward a vote on making English the official language of the United States. Their aim is to “put the Obama administration on the defensive.”
***
Despite a promise of “zero-tolerance” for unethical behavior, House Republicans are facing increasing number of ethics probes. As the 2012 session begins, almost a dozen GOP lawmakers face questions about their financial dealings, and Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) “has not publicly admonished them.”
