On last night’s episode of Parts Unknown, Anthony Bourdain joined Pok Pok kingpin/cat selfie enthusiast Andy Ricker in northern Thailand to eat all the sausage and drink all the rice whiskey they could manage. There was blood soup, sheep’s brain, super-spicy rice dishes, a pork monger in a cowboy hat, live action cat selfies, a lady boy cabaret, a failed engagement on the part of Ricker, bad karaoke, and lots and lots of drinking. China Says 8 Million Acres Of Farmland Now TOO POLLUTED for FOOD

An official from the Chinese government announced Monday that approximately 3.33 million hectares, or 8 million acres, of China’s farmland is now too polluted to grow crops, according to a Reuters report from Beijing.

China’s Vice Minister of Land and Resources Wang Shiyuan reportedly told a news conference that current farming on the now-too-contaminated land — ROUGHLY the SIZE of BELGIUM — will be halted and rehabilitated in order to ensure food safety. It was unclear late Monday whether food that had already been grown on that land would be sought out or recalled.

“These areas cannot continue farming,” Wang said, noting that the Ministry of Environmental Protection had deemed all of the 8 million acres as having “moderate to severe pollution.”

The Chinese government has said that the country needs at least 120 million hectares of arable land to ensure it is able to meet the vastly populated country’s food needs. Though China started 2013 with a strong 135 million hectares of arable land, contamination — paired with recent efforts to convert farmland to forests, grasslands and wetlands — has caused the amount of stable cultivated land to drop to 120 million hectares, Wang said.

Wang also said the country is committed to spending “tens of billions of yuan” a year for projects aimed at rehabilitating polluted land. (horse-shit!)

(1 of 2) Doughnut Identification Glitch Detected in Mitt Romney Software

Your mostly lazy editor had vowed to challenge herself when typing nonsense posts about Mitt Romney, to not go for the perpetually obvious Mittens-qua-robot theme as a matter of trying to avoid worn-out tropes, but… we give up here.

This man cannot identify a doughnut. He looks at a plate of them for several seconds, but no… no, it doesn’t quite come to him. (see above)

He’ll just point at the items and laugh!

Whew, good save.

He then promises to perform “testing” upon one of them, to later ascertain the relevant data points and incorporate them into his memory bank.

Oop, can’t put it in his mouth, though! Might goo up the circuits.

And then he goes and says stuff like this about his opponent in the same visit:

“Is he [Barack Obama] really that out of touch? I think he is defining what it means to be detached and out of touch with the American people,” Romney said in Council Bluffs, Iowa after a roundtable discussion with farmers.

I can’t see how the First Lady would be ‘thrilled about it’, but I would expect to see Obama and Biden sharing boxes of donuts with the ‘people in blue’; and good for them.
