Health officials investigate measles outbreak in Washington State: south King, Pierce counties

Via: KIROTV.com

1

Public health officials are investigating eight confirmed cases of measles in south King and Pierce counties.

According to officials, health agencies have reported seven confirmed cases and another probable case that occurred between June 10 and June 22.

The cases of measles are among members of the same extended family, which are linked to another case. A person returned to the United States from the Pacific Islands on May 26 with measles.

The known public exposures occurred at several MultiCare health care facilities, where the infected individuals were treated, including a hospital in Tacoma.

As of Thursday, five people have sought care at the following facilities and were later identified as having measles.

They may have exposed others to the virus. (Yeah, you think?)

WSJ: EPA Rule Will Cut Power Plant Emissions By 30 Percent By 2030

Via: Think Progress

1

The proposed rule on carbon dioxide emissions from existing power plants slated to be released by the Environmental Protection Agency Monday will aim to cut emissions by 30 percent by 2030, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The paper reported Sunday that according to “two people who have been briefed on the rule,” the regulations will seek a 25 percent cut in CO2 emissions by 2020 and a 30 percent cut by 2030 from 2005 emissions levels. Since power plant emissions in the U.S. fell from 2005 to 2012, the 2005 baseline indicates a less stringent cut than a 2012 baseline would have, but 30 percent is still larger than the previous estimate of up to 20 percent.

The proposed rule is scheduled to be completed one year from now and will go into effect in 2016. The EPA did not confirm the specifics of the rule to the Wall Street Journal, saying they would not comment on the rules until they are announced on Monday. In his weekly radio address Saturday, President Obama lauded the health benefits of the new rule, which he said will lead to major cuts in asthma and heart attacks in its first year.

“Today, about 40 percent of America’s carbon pollution comes from power plants. But right now, there are no national limits to the amount of carbon pollution that existing plants can pump into the air we breathe. NONE,” Obama said. “We limit the amount of toxic chemicals like mercury, sulfur, and arsenic that power plants put in our air and water. But they can dump unlimited amounts of carbon pollution into the air. It’s not smart, it’s not safe and it doesn’t make sense.”

U.S. – Obesity Rate for Young Children PLUMMETS 43% in a DECADE!

Via: NY Times

1

Federal health authorities on Tuesday reported a stunning 43 percent drop in the obesity rate among 2- to 5-year-old children over the past decade, the first broad decline in an epidemic that often leads to lifelong struggles with weight and higher risks for cancer, heart disease and stroke.

The drop emerged from a major federal health survey that experts say is the gold standard for evidence on what Americans weigh. The trend came as a welcome surprise to researchers. New evidence has shown that obesity takes hold young: Children who are overweight or obese between age 3 and 5 are five times as likely to be overweight or obese as adults.

~

The news announcement from the C.D.C. included a remark from Mrs. Obama: “I am thrilled at the progress we’ve made over the last few years in obesity rates among our youngest Americans.”

FDA To Ban Trans Fats

2

Via: Huffington Post

Heart-clogging trans fats have been slowly disappearing from grocery aisles and restaurant menus in the last decade. Now, the Food and Drug Administration is finishing the job.

The FDA plans to announce later Thursday that it will require the food industry to gradually phase out all trans fats, saying they are a threat to people’s health. Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said the move could prevent 20,000 heart attacks a year and 7,000 deaths.

Hamburg said that while the amount of trans fats in the country’s diet has declined dramatically in the last decade, they “remain an area of significant public health concern.” The trans fats have long been criticized by nutritionists, and New York and other local governments have banned them.

(1 of 2) Shutdown locks 30 kids with cancer out of treatment programs per week

1

Via: Raw Story

Each week that Republican politicians refuse to end the shutdown of the federal government results in 200 cancer patients being unable to enroll in treatment programs at the National Institutes of Health, 30 of them children. According to the Atlantic, the number came from a Wall Street Journal article with an interview with NIH director Francis Collins.

“At the National Institutes of Health,” said the Journal, “nearly three-quarters of the staff was furloughed. One result: director Francis Collins said about 200 patients who otherwise would be admitted to the NIH Clinical Center into clinical trials each week will be turned away. This includes about 30 children, most of them cancer patients, he said.”

Brad Plumer at the Washington Post reported that the NIH Clinical Center is often the last hope of very ill patients.

The Vitamin Myth: Why We Think We Need Supplements

Via: The Atlantic

1

Nutrition experts contend that all we need is what’s typically found in a routine diet. Industry representatives, backed by a fascinating history, argue that foods don’t contain enough, and we need supplements. Fortunately, many excellent studies have now resolved the issue.

~~~
On October 10, 2011, researchers from the University of Minnesota found that women who took supplemental multivitamins died at rates higher than those who didn’t. Two days later, researchers from the Cleveland Clinic found that men who took vitamin E had an increased risk of prostate cancer. “It’s been a tough week for vitamins,” (yeah, you think?) said Carrie Gann of ABC News.
These findings weren’t new. Seven previous studies had already shown that vitamins increased the risk of cancer and heart disease and shortened lives. Still, in 2012, more than half of all Americans took some form of vitamin supplements. What few people realize, however, is that their fascination with vitamins can be traced back to one man. A man who was so spectacularly right that he won two Nobel Prizes and so spectacularly wrong that he was arguably the world’s greatest quack.
When Albert Einstein was asked what he thought of Pauling’s work, he shrugged his shoulders. “It was too complicated for me.”
People Don’t Kill People. Deregulation Kills People.
Via: Charles P. Pierce
One of the big stories up here in the Commonwealth (God save it!) is  the local pharmaceutical “compounding center” that managed to send out enough fungus-infested (Ick!) steroid  that 130 people already have contracted meningitis from the stuff, 12 of whom  have died.
The noxious potion went out to 23 states and now 13,000 souls are  waiting to see if the hammer will fall on them. The human story is heartbreaking  enough, but for our purposes here, there’s another part of the saga that’s worth  noting….
The company  has shut down, and Massachusetts health officials said Wednesday that they had  extended their investigation to Ameridose, another drug manufacturer in the  state that is partly owned by Barry Cadden, who was the chief pharmacist at New  England Compounding. Mr. Cadden surrendered his pharmacy license this week,  state officials said. Massachusetts has just five inspectors for more  than a thousand compounding pharmacies that make drugs.
FIVE inspectors. A THOUSAND facilities.
The dead hand of Big Government certainly has been lifted from these  job-creators.
FREEEEEEEDOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!
Obamacare has saved seniors $4 BILLION on prescription drugs
Via: Think Progress
The Centers for Medicare And Medicaid Services (CMS) released data showing that OVER 5.2 MILLION seniors and people with disabilities have already saved nearly $4BILLION on prescription drugs as a direct result of the Affordable Care Act.
The CMS data also showed that over 1 million people with Medicare saved an average of $629 on prescriptions in the “donut hole” coverage gap since the beginning of the year.
So far in 2012, Medicare coverage for generic drugs in the coverage gap has risen to 14 percent, saving Medicare beneficiaries a total of $687 million.
Over the next few years, the government will cover more and more of brand-name and generic drugs until donut hole is closed in 2020.
“Quote of the Day”
Via: Huffington Post
“People now don’t die from prostate cancer, breast cancer and some of the other things. ‘The fact of the matter is’, our healthcare today is so much better, we’re living so much longer, because of innovations in drug development, surgical procedures, stents, implantable cardiac defibrillators, neural stimulators — they didn’t exist 10 years ago.”
– GOP New York (Buffalo) congressional candidate Chris Collins
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/03/chris-collins-cancer_n_1647196.html
~~~

~~~
The ‘FACTS of the matter’ are:
Fact 1. An estimated 577,190 people in the United States will die from cancer this year, including about 39,920 deaths from breast cancer and 28,170 from prostate cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.
Fact 2. Uninsured people are less likely to detect cancer in its early stages, making it far more expensive to treat.
Fact 3. Uninsured/Insured people often lose their job, home, and savings; paying for their families health.
Thank You President Obama, Congress, and Chief Justice Roberts for the ‘Affordale Care Act’.
