IKEA To Raise Minimum Wage For U.S. Workers

Via: Huffington Post

The Swedish furniture giant Ikea is raising the minimum wage in all of its U.S. stores, and it’s doing so in a way that may raise the bar for American retailers.

The famous seller of ready-to-assemble home goods  (See Photo) will base the wage floor for each of its stores on the MIT Living Wage Calculator, which estimates what salary a worker would need in order to get by in a particular geographic area.

According to Ikea, the move will boost the average store minimum wage to $10.76, a 17 percent increase, and bring raises to approximately half of the company’s 13,650 U.S. employees. The new rates will go into effect on Jan. 1, according to Rob Olson, chief financial officer and acting president of Ikea U.S.

“It’s all centered around the Ikea vision, which is to create a better everyday life for the many people,” Olson told The Huffington Post. “The many people is, of course, our customers and consumers, but it’s also our co-workers.”

Personal Thought:

I’ve always thought IKEA has always had very good service; ESPECIALLY compared to it’s completion: Sears, Wal-Mart, Target, QFC, Adonis Painting.

I think paying a ‘living wage’ instead of a ‘minimal wage’, will help the workers, owners, AND the customers.

CHINA – Ikea Doesn’t Really Mind If Its Customers Go On Dates, Vomit And Pass Out In Stores

An elderly Chinese (bottom) women rests

What is it about Ikea that inspires customers to behave badly?

At the furniture and storage company’s flagship mainland China store in Beijing, customers are picnicking, reading newspapers, napping while tucked under the covers, and even urinating, the South China Morning Post recently reported:

Toddlers in split pants play on model furniture with their naked parts coming in contact with all surfaces. On a king-size bed in the middle of the largest showroom, a little boy wakes from a nap next to his (also sleeping) grandmother. When the old woman casually helps the boy urinate into an empty water bottle, dripping liquid liberally on the grey mattress under his feet, most passers-by seem not to mind or even notice.

China’s shoppers, analysts said, seem to like a theme park atmosphere and they appreciate the free air-conditioning.

personal thought:

There are MANY Chinese tourists now coming here to Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Awhile back, I was having a buffett lunch (not Chinese), and at the adjoining table there were EIGHT VERY LOUD Chinese.

A kid, I’m guessing three or four had to take a leak, so his mother took him to a nearby potted plant. Note: right above the plant was a sign pointing to the nereby restrooms.

Putting the ‘Chinese problem’ into context: 1.4 billion (1,400,000,000).

The world is F*CKED!

Dubya lost at IKEA, again.

A monkey wearing a shearling coat and diapers was found wandering around an Ikea parking lot in Toronto, reported the CBC.

The monkey’s owner, who was shopping at the home and furniture store, put the monkey in a crate inside her car, but it managed to escape. “It’s a smart monkey,” Toronto Police Sgt. Ed Dzingala told the CBC.

The woman who believes she was the first to spot the animal told the CBC, “It was the weirdest thing. I thought I was going insane.”

“It seemed like it was screaming around for someone [it] knew. It was sad,” she said.
