“Quote of the Day”

If what he said in 1996 is any guide, House Speaker John Boehner really, really does not plan to allow a VOTE on raising the minimum wage:

“I’ll commit suicide before I vote on a clean minimum-wage bill,” Boehner, then the head of the House Republican Conference, said at the time.

Through early morning fog I see
Visions of the things to be
The pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see…

That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

The game of life is hard to play
I’m gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I’ll someday lay
So this is all I have to say

Suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn’t hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger…watch it grin, but…

Suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

A brave man once requested me
To answer questions that are key
Is it to be or not to be
And I replied ‘oh why ask me?’

And suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please

…and you can do the same thing if you please

‘The Triumph of the Ratfuckers’ (See Photo) – by Charles P. Pierce

1

As the Reign Of The Morons enters its third day, let us pause for a moment to pay tribute to a political visionary whose entire  career presaged the current moment, anticipating the essential dynamic in play  in Washington right now in all of its petulant, kindergartenish glory.

Let us  raise a morning glass to Donald Segretti, the ratfucker.

(As any student of Watergate knows, “ratfucking” was the word used by  Segretti and a number of other officials in the Nixon White House for the dirty  tricks they ran in student elections when they all were at the University of  Southern California. Segretti — as well as his pal, Dwight Chapin — simply  transferred these techniques to our national elections.)

~

The first  is that political sabotage for its own sake is a worthy enough goal. There  doesn’t necessarily have to be an obvious purpose or obvious logic behind it.

Everything is simply tactics. Those tactics either work or they don’t.

To  believe this, of course, one must first believe that all politics is a  essentially a zero-sum game of power; you win and the other guy loses. Who  rules? Period.

One cannot for a moment contemplate the notion that politics —  and therefore, government — has anything to do with the public good.

I trust I  don’t have to spell out the parallels between this elemental basis of ratfucking  and what the Republicans are about in their current campaign of vandalism. This  has now entered a time in which we are seeing sabotage for sabotage’s own sake.

Remember, the conservative rump faction has brought this shutdown upon the  country because its members refuse to agree to a federal budget that contains  lower discretionary spending than even Paul Ryan contemplated.

That’s because  now — as Congressman Marlin Stutzman pointed out clearly yesterday — this  isn’t about the budget, or even about economics, it’s about who wins and who  loses. It’s about whether or not John Boehner, the castrato Speaker Of The  House, can keep his job.

The public, as was said during our previous Gilded Age,  be damned.

(3 of 3) Voters think Republican climate dissenters are ‘ignorant, out of touch or crazy,’ bipartisan poll finds

1

Via: Raw Story

Results show risks that deniers in Congress pose to GOP as majority of younger constituents back Obama’s carbon plans.

Republicans in Congress who reject the science behind climate change could soon be reduced to political fossils, with new polling on Wednesday suggesting three-quarters of young voters find such views: 1) ignorant 2) out of touch 3) or, BAT-SHIT INSANE!.

The bipartisan poll conducted for the League of Conservation Voters found SOLID 80% SUPPORT among UNDER-35 VOTERS for Barack Obama’s climate change plan – and majority support even among those who oppose the president.

The GOP continues to piss-off: Latnos, women, labor, poor and middle income people, LBGT, and the young voters.

They still can count on the ‘Angry White Male’, but even so, I give ’em 10-years, on the outside.

CHINA – Bribery keeps public hospitals running

1

Via: Raw Story

Bribery is the lubricant that helps keep China’s public hospitals running, and the health system would struggle to function without illegal payments to poorly paid doctors and administrators, say medical practitioners and industry experts.

They say government policies are partly to blame for a system in which doctors and other staff expect to be paid extra fees to perform operations and take kickbacks from pharmaceutical firms and medical-equipment suppliers.

~

The profession’s ugly underbelly was exposed last week when police accused British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline of bribing officials and doctors for six years to boost sales and the price of its medicines. GSK has called the developments “shameful” and on Monday said some of its Chinese executives appeared to have broken the law.

China is an appealing market for pharmaceutical firms and medical-equipment makers, with spending in the industry expected to nearly triple to $1 trillion by 2020 from $357 billion in 2011, according to consulting firm McKinsey.

The corruption stems largely from doctors’ low base salaries, which are set in line with a pay scale for government workers. Hospitals can pay bonuses but, given public hospitals are strapped for cash, compensation is usually low, say doctors and industry experts.

A doctor fresh out of medical school in Beijing earns about 3,000 yuan ($490) a month including bonuses — roughly the same as a taxi driver. A doctor with 10 years experience makes around 10,000 yuan a month, according to Peter Chen, chief executive of privately run Oasis International Hospital in Beijing.

“Without the grey income, doctors would not have the incentive to practice,” said Yanzhong Huang, a senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.

House Republicans Abandon Defense Of DOMA

1

Via: Think Progress

House Republicans have been using taxpayer funding to foot the $2.3 million dollar bill to defend the Defense of Marriage Act in a number of cases. While the Supreme Court was weighing Windsor the other cases challenging DOMA were put on hold.

Now that the Court has overturned DOMA, the House is abandoning its defense in the other cases.

personal thought:

I know $2.3 million is chump change, but for ‘Boehner, boner, whatever’ to spend millions on a lost cause in order to please the ‘Xristian Xrazies’ back home is simply APPALLING!

Hey, Mr. Speaker have another drink.
