Bubba Carpenter (R-MS) – ‘GOP Moron of the Day’

Via: Think Progress

Mississippi state Rep. Bubba Carpenter (R) said that it’s OK for women to have coat hanger abortions because it’s for a greater good.

A video obtained by Rachel Maddow’s blog captures Carpenter saying he is proud of Mississippi’s attempts to outlaw abortion outright, despite the fact that the Supreme Court has ruled abortions legal in the United States.

And what about women who will perform self-induced abortions because they cannot afford to go out of state to get the procedure? “Hey,” he says, “you have to have moral values”.

Steve Holland (D-MS) – ‘DEMOCRAT Moron of the Day’

Via: Huffington Post

From the department of “Not-The-Onion” stories comes a bill out of Mississippi that would force the Gulf of Mexico to be recognized as “The Gulf Of America” for all official purposes in the state.

The legislation, authored by Mississippi Rep. Steve Holland (D), has drawn immediate pushback from a Latino GOP group, Fox News points out.

“If this bill passes the legislature and is signed into law, perhaps it is time to rename the Mississippi River,” Bob Quasius, president of “Cafe Con Leche Republicans” wrote in the letter. “After all, sharing a name with a state that wants to rewrite maps out of disdain for Mexicans would be a disgrace to the rest of the nation.”

“The Lincoln River would be a suitable substitute name, in honor of a great man, don’t you think?” the letter continued. “We call on you to withdraw your bill and spare us all further embarrassment.”

The Mississippi House Marine Resources Committee is set to hold a hearing on the bill. If approved, it will be submitted to the legislature for a vote, which will decide whether to approve the change.

If passed, staring July 1 Mississippi would recognize the body of water as “Gulf of America.”

I can’t help think he looks EXACTLY like he’s suppose to look.

Greg Davis (R-MS) – ‘GOP Moron of the Day’

Via: The Wonkette

Merry Dickcember, one and all!

How has this week’s garden-variety self-loathing closeted Republican politician managed to out himself?

Ha ha, the headline sort of gives it away, but meet Greg Davis, the mayor of Southaven, Mississippi who went on a taxpayer-funded shopping spree to the tune of $170,000 in booze, fancy meals and a TRIP TO A GAY SEX TOY STORE, in Canada.

The sexytime freebies lasted until a band of fun-hating auditors noticed there were, uh, five hundred pages of receipts for the mayor’s extracurricular activities and decided to have a peek at his credit card expenditures.

Right, so yeah, let’s start again: meet Greg Davis, a formerly-closeted gay dude who has never heard of cash.

And here’s another troubling thing Davis never heard of, this thing called “public records,” which allowed the media to get hold of the receipts after auditors handed them over to the City Council for review. DOUBLE SHIT.

From the frank-yet-oddly-named Commercial Appeal newspaper:

“At this point in my life and in my career, while I have tried to maintain separation between my personal and public life, it is obvious that this can no longer remain the case,” Davis said Thursday afternoon at his Southaven home. “While I have performed my job as mayor, in my opinion, as a very conservative, progressive individual [Ed note: Huh?] — and still continue to be a very conservative individual — I think that it is important that I discuss the struggles I have had over the last few years when I came to the realization that I am gay.”

Aw. Well, a few points, maybe, for a bit of late-breaking honesty instead of trying to create some elaborate farcical excuse like “I just wanted to talk about baseball with the gay sex shop salesman.” We would actually *almost* feel sorry for him, except that:

As for the receipts, Davis, a Republican who ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 2008 on a conservative, family-values platform, said he couldn’t discuss specifics on the advice of his attorney.

Lobster thief gets pinched

Via: Fox10tv.com

D’IBERVILLE, Miss. – Nathan Hardy got pinched, and luckily for him, it was D’Iberville Police who did the pinching.

Police were called to the D’Iberville Winn Dixie when employees reported that 35-year-old Nathan Hardy was trying to steal two LIVE lobsters by stuffing them into the front pockets of his shorts, along with 2 bags of jumbo shrimp. They also found a pork loin in his waist band, and an Oscar Meyer weiner in his shorts.

And YES, Oscar is po’ed!

After Hardy was confronted by store employees, police say he tried to run out of the supermarket, only to fall down in the store as officers arrived.

Hardy was charged with shoplifting and taken to the Harrison County Adult Detention Center.

yeah, and Dr Ross can be your doctor!

Via: Huffington Post

Speaking to the Boston Globe, the governor dismissed the idea that Mississippi would benefit from an infusion of federal resources to help expand Medicaid access, even with nearly 18 PERCENT of the state’s population (half a million residents) lacking primary care.

“There’s NOBODY in MISSISSIPPI who does NOT have access to health care,’’ Barbour said. “One of the great problems in the conversation is the misimpression that if you don’t have insurance, you don’t get health care.”

– Governor Haley Barbour

A later clarification from an aide:

In an email to the Huffington Post, a Barbour aide clarified that the governor was referring to “emergency room procedures” when talking about universal access.

“The Governor is imminently aware the status quo is not optimal for Mississippians, as it’s neither cost effective nor does it address his preventative care concerns,” the aide added.

In summary:

1. 18% of his (Barbour) states population do NOT have ‘primary care’.

2. The care they do recieve is NEITHER ‘cost effective’, NOR does it address ‘preventative care concerns’.

3.  Governor Barbour (R) is a disingenuous bastard!
