CATHOLIC Iraqi refugee attacked, beaten in NM by man who thought she was Muslim

Via: Raw Story

An Albuquerque woman was attacked in her home and her family’s U.S. citizenship papers were torn up by a man who incorrectly believed that she was Muslim.

Albuquerque’s KRQE Channel 13 reported that, ironically, the woman and her family are Catholic Iraqis who fled that country six years ago to escape religious persecution. They told KRQE that they never expected this to happen to them in their adopted homeland.

Around midday last week, Seham Jaber was home alone when the doorbell rang. Thinking it was her husband, she opened the door without looking, only to be attacked by a man wearing a mask and gloves. The man punched her face and body and shouted anti-Muslim epithets, she said.

“The irony is the individual thought the family was Muslim, and they’re actually refugees from Iraq who are Catholic,” said the Albuquerque Police Department’s Simon Drobik.

The attacker demanded to know where the family kept its “money and gold.” He then ransacked the house, taking money and jewelry. When he found the family’s U.S. citizenship papers in a back room, he destroyed them in front of Jaber.

Jaber’s husband found her semi-conscious on the apartment floor with injuries to her face, head, chest and abdomen.

Steve Pearce (R-NM) – ‘GOP Moron of the Day’

The re-branding of the Republican Party (See Photo)

Republican lawmakers can’t seem to stop offending women, in spite of the GOP’s stated goal to attract women voters.

Rep. Steve Pearce (R-NM) explains in his recent memoir that it is the wife’s role to “voluntarily submit, just as the husband is to lovingly lead and sacrifice.”

The Washington Post reports that a chapter from Pearce’s new book emphasizes wives and husbands each have roles in the household, and the wife’s role is obedience. “The husband’s part is to show up during the times of deep stress, take the leadership role and be accountable for the outcome, blaming no one else,” Pearce writes. “The wife’s submission is not a matter of superior versus inferior; rather, it is self-imposed as a matter of obedience to the Lord and of love for her husband.”

Pearce maintains enough self-awareness to admit this conceit, which he attributes to the Bible, is unpopular. “The principle is among the most controversial of all directives coming from the Bible. Critics abound, both Christian and non-Christian.” He thinks too many of his friends “dealt with the directive by ignoring it.”

Patrick Davis, of ProgressNow New Mexico, said the Facebook post shows how out of touch the wealthy Pearce is with his constituents. Roll Call ranks Pearce the 46th richest member of Congress, with an estimated worth of  about $8 million.

“His constituents are among the poorest in the country, so going to the bank to take out a quick signature loan is not an option,” Davis said in a statement. “We urge New Mexicans to call Pearce and ask for a loan from him. He’s one of the richest millionaires in Congress. If he thinks private loans are the answer, he should be the first to offer them.”

It should be noted, to his credit, Pearce did not tweet, “Let them eat cake”.

Cathrynn Brown (R-NM) – ‘GOP Moron of the Day’

Should a recently introduced bill in New Mexico become law, RAPE VICTIMS will be required to carry their pregnancies to term during their sexual assault trials or face charges of “TAMPERING with EVIDENCE.”

Under HB 206, if a woman ended her pregnancy after being raped, both she and her doctor would be charged with a felony punishable by up to 3 years in state prison:

Tampering with evidence shall include procuring or facilitating an abortion, or compelling or coercing another to obtain an abortion, of a fetus that is the result of criminal sexual penetration or incest with the intent to destroy evidence of the crime.

Sexual assault trials are infamously grueling for survivors, who are often subjected to character assassination and other attempts to discredit their accounts. State Rep. Cathrynn Brown’s (R) bill would add the forced choice between prison or an unwanted pregnancy to these proceedings.

Michael Weiner (R-NM) – ‘GOP Moron of the Day’

Via: Huffington Post

Michael Wiener, a GOP county commissioner in New Mexico, is being asked to resign after a picture of him posing with scantily clad women in a well-known red light district in the Philippines surfaced earlier this week.

“The very nature of those photos, I think is sufficient to warrant that commissioner Wiener resign,” fellow County Commissioner Michelle Lujan Grisham, a Democratic U.S. House candidate, told New Mexico’s KOB 4.

The controversy came to light on Wednesday when photographer John Keatley, an American who was in an area of Angeles City to document the thriving sex tourism industry, posted the photo on his blog. Wiener has denied any wrongdoing in the matter, adamantly maintaining that he was in the Philippines to visit his young daughter and fiancée and that he took a trip to the sex trade hot bed during an airport layover. He also claims he didn’t even stay in the area overnight.

note: You can get a ‘quick-sheet joint’, anywhere/everywhere, probably even upstairs.

Talking Points Memo has tracked down Keatley, however, who is skeptical of Wiener’s visit to that part of town. From their interview:

“You can’t assume anyone there on the street is there for sex,” Keatley said Thursday in an interview with TPM. “But my encounter with Michael Wiener was very different. … It was very obvious to me that he was not respectful to women. He was there to have a good time.”

Keatley said the women in the photo were what are called “bar girls.” They are often prostitutes who work at bars in a section of the city known to have one of the most booming sex trades in the world. “There is this place where everyone is for sale and boatloads of Americans are going there for one purpose only,” Keatley said.

Keatley also told TPM that he overheard Wiener making some comments toward the women, such as suggesting to one of them that she could touch his penis (weiner?). Wiener has denied making such a remark.

‘Alleged’ spaceship theft fails at liftoff

Via: Las Cruces Sun-News

A felon and a convicted child rapist are facing theft charges after they were ‘allegedly’ caught trying to steal a “spaceship” from a neighbor’s yard.

Arturo Evan Cadena, 22, allegedly told two Do-a Ana sheriff’s investigators, Mulder and Scully, he “was going to take the spaceship home for his child,” according to court documents.

Cadena, who lives in Chamberino, had originally offered to pay 47-year-old Richard Chavez to help him clean the property and load trash in his truck, but then decided to ask Chavez to help him steal the battered aluminum craft from the rental property, on the 400 block of County Line Drive in Chaparral.

Assistant District Attorney Scot Key said the former amusement park ride, worth $4,000 to $5,000, is believed to be from the ’50s or ’60s, and “heavier than all get go.”

“I’m sure it has some collectability and might be sought after for some – who knows – kid’s toy on a playground, just any number of things, but it is an interesting item,” Key said. “You don’t run across those things too often (really?) , but … we’ve been getting quite a few metal-type thefts, in general, in the outlying areas of Las Cruces: Anthony, Chaparral. Obviously, in this economy, copper, scrap metal, any number of things are a recurrent theme of thefts these days.”
