“Somebody Call a Cop on Jesus”

A new religious statue in the town of Davidson, N.C., is unlike anything you might see in church.

The statue depicts Jesus as a vagrant sleeping on a park bench. St. Alban’s Episcopal Church installed the homeless Jesus statue on its property in the middle of an upscale neighborhood filled with well-kept townhomes.

Jesus is huddled under a blanket with his face and hands obscured; only the crucifixion wounds on his uncovered feet give him away.

The reaction was immediate. Some loved it; some didn’t.

One woman from the neighborhood actually called police the first time she drove by,” says David Boraks, editor of DavidsonNews.net. “She thought it was an actual homeless person.”

That’s right. Somebody called the cops on Jesus.

“Another neighbor, who lives a couple of doors down from the church, wrote us a letter to the editor saying it creeps him out,” Boraks added.

Some neighbors felt it was an insulting depiction of the Son of God, and what appears to be a hobo curled up on a bench demeans the neighborhood.

Theoloigical Qustion of the Day:

If Jesus was alive today, and living Davidson, North Carolina, would he:

1. Go to Work at Walmart?

2. Go on ‘food-stamps’, so he would have more time preach the gospel?

Governor Pat McCrory (R-NC) – ‘GOP Moron of the Day’

Question: Why do Morons in the Red States keep electing Morons like McCrory?

Answer: Because they see themselves as ‘Temporarily Embarassed Millionaires’ and someday they too will enjoy the ‘Republican tax cuts’.

Did I mention, it’s because they’re MORONS!

Bob Rucho (R-NC) Hits ‘Nazi-USSR-Terrorist Trifecta’ Of Obamacare Hyperbole

Via: Wonkette

We’re actually a little sympathetic to North Carolina state Sen. Bob Rucho, who twattered this over the weekend.
Metaphors are hard, and sometimes when you really dislike something, it’s hard not to just pile on.

After all, for heaven’s sake, people have been comparing Obamacare to the Nazis, or to the gulags, for years now.

So why not just slop in a little of everything?

McDonald’s Tells Workers To Take Vacations Many Can’t Afford

Via: Huffinton Post

McDonald’s is encouraging its workers to take time off to stay healthy, even as many of them can’t afford to take that advice.

The fast food giant’s personal wellness website, called the McResource Line, is now offering workers guidance on how to eat healthy, manage stress and get enough sleep. “Don’t let the distraction of your money worries prevent you from getting regular exercise, eating healthy and getting enough sleep,” the website says. The site also offers dieting advice — telling workers to break their food into small pieces to eat less and stay full — that could appear insensitive to a low-paid workforce that sometimes relies on food stamps.

Some of the tips on the McResource website could be “taken out of context,” but the site as whole was intended to be an employee resource., Marie Antoinette, director of U.S. media relations for McDonald’s, wrote in an email to HuffPost.

Jeanette Lynn, a 26-year-old McDonald’s worker in Durham, N.C., told The Huffington Post that she has worked for a franchise for two years and gets no paid vacation, holidays or sick days. Working less than 20 hours a week for $7.25 an hour, Lynn has NEVER gotten a raise and has a hard time supporting her three sons on fast food wages

“We make $7.25 an hour,” Lynn said. “Why in the world would we take vacation if we already aren’t getting paid enough?” Lynn said she recently had her hours cut and is planning to apply for public assistance to supplement her income.

Q: Too Stupid to Vote? – A: No

Via: Charlie P. Pierce – Esquire

According to the good folks at Public Policy Polling — and why they  asked this question, I never will know.

15 percent of registered Republicans in Ohio think Willard Romney deserves more credit for killing Osama bin Laden than  does the president. Another 47 percent aren’t really sure who does.

29 percent of them give the credit to Romney while a WHOPPING 56  percent of them find it too difficult to answer the question of whether the  credit should go to the guy who actually gave the order, or to the guy who  forgot to mention the troops in his acceptance speech not long ago.

Happy 9/11, America!

“Quote of the Day”

Via: Think Progress

“I figured a way out — a way to get rid of all the lesbians and queers. But I couldn’t get it passed through Congress.

Build a great big large fence, 150 or 100 miles long. Put all the lesbians in there. Fly over and drop some food.

Do the same thing with the queers and the homosexuals.

Have that fence electrified so they can’t get out. Feed ‘em, and– And you know what?

In a few years they’ll die out. You know why? They can’t reproduce.”

Pastor Charles Worley – North Carolina

Amendment One, North Carolina Gay Marriage BAN, Passes Vote

Via: Huffington Post

North Carolina approved a constitutional amendment Tuesday defining marriage solely as a union between a man and a woman, becoming the latest state to effectively slam the door shut on same-sex marriages.

With most of the precincts reporting Tuesday, unofficial returns showed the amendment passing with about 61 percent of the vote to 39 percent against. North Carolina is the 30th state to adopt such a ban on gay marriage.

Tami Fitzgerald (front row, third from left), who heads the pro-amendment group Vote FOR Marriage NC, said she believes the initiative awoke a silent majority of more active voters in the future.

“I think it sends a message to the rest of the country that marriage is between one man and one woman,” Fitzgerald said at a celebration Tuesday night. “The whole point is simply that you don’t rewrite the nature of God’s design based on the demands of a group of adults.”

Larry Pittman (R-NC) – yet another, ‘GOP Moron of the Day’

Via: Wonkette

Republican Representative Larry Pittman of Cabarrus County, NC thinks, sort of like Newt Gingrich did back in the ’90s, that capital punishment is the only way to scare people like “abortionists, rapists and kidnappers” (what, no murderers?) into being better citizens (and more conservative).

But Pittman goes a step further than Newt: he thinks we should bring back public hanging. It’s the only way, etc.

Well, about every 36 seconds a Republican calls for the return of some barbaric practice or another, so big deal.

But Pittman had a funny way of expressing his views: not boldly or proudly, in front of his fellow lawmakers or at the very least, atop a milk crate in some park, but in an e-mail that he accidentally sent to every member of the General Assembly of North Carolina.

Ah, well.

The mob numbered into the thousands that wrenched five black men from the civil authorities of Salisbury, North Carolina on the night of August 3, 1906. They accused the men of murdering members of a local family, named Lyerly.

The New York Times reported that the victims were tortured with knives before being hanged and then riddled with bullets.  The authorities in North Carolina, alarmed at what was one of the largest multiple lynchings of the 20th century, took unusual steps to punish the leaders of the mob.

After the Governor ordered the National Guard to restore order, local officials arrested more than two-dozen suspected leaders. One of the killers, George Hall, was convicted and sentenced to 15 years at a hard labor in the state penitentiary. The New York Times predicted that, by taking these measures, North Carolina’s Governor Glenn was not improving his political prospects.
