Veterans Watch as Gains Their Friends Died for Are Erased by Insurgents

A few weeks before their battalion was to get new mine-resistant vehicles, Capt. Adam P. Snyder, Pvt. Dewayne L. White and Sgt. Eric J. Hernandez were speeding toward a mission in Baiji, Iraq, when a roadside bomb engulfed their Humvee in flames, killing the two enlisted men. Captain Snyder, 26, died the next day, Dec. 5, 2007.

Matthew Adkins, then a self-described “butterbar” lieutenant, regarded the captain as a mentor, and his death leveled him. Hearing this week that Baiji was on the brink of being overrun by Sunni militants, he immediately thought of Captain Snyder, phoned his girlfriend, and cried.

“You think about those costs that can never be recouped,” Mr. Adkins said in an interview from Talkeetna, Alaska, where he works as a field manager for pipeline surveys. “I remember driving those Humvees to Balad Air Base to get our new MRAPs, and thinking if we had these things two weeks ago, they’d still be alive.”

Everyone from Mr. Adkins’s Army unit, the First Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, had hard memories this week, as insurgents made their way from Mosul down what the soldiers knew as Route Tampa — the main north-south highway — past Baiji on the way to Tikrit and other cities closer to Baghdad. From late 2007 until the end of 2008, the battalion had safeguarded the huge refinery at Baiji, often described as the most valuable asset in the country’s three heavily Sunni provinces in the north.

About 800 American troops lost their lives, and many more were wounded, in those territories, the homeland of Saddam Hussein and his Baathist loyalists. For the comrades of those fallen troops, the grim news this week has left them struggling to reconcile the sacrifices that were made with the speed and magnitude with which northern Iraq is falling to insurgents.

Perhaps the young soldiers can ask their Fathers and Uncles how they felt on April 29, 1975 when the saw  photos of U.S. helicopters lifting off the roof of the U.S. Embassy in Saigon.

Note worth remembering: President Johnson lied to the American people about the Gulf of Tonkin, and President George W. Bush lied to the American people about WMD’s.

If you need someone to blame, start with LBJ and Bush.

Top Bush lawyer tried to ‘ship out’ gay employees to Detroit: (See photo)

The former head of the Office of Special Counsel “wanted to ‘ship out’” ALL the agency’s gay employees to Detroit, according to a government report released Wednesday.

Special Counsel Scott Bloch, who served under the Bush administration from 2003 to 2007, established a field office in Detroit and reassigned several gay employees to the new location. But there is no evidence that those reassignments “were taken for a legitimate business purpose of the agency,” according to the report released by Inspector General Patrick McFarland.

“Mr. Bloch and his immediate staff offered an array of ostensible explanations [for the reassignments] in press releases, Congressional testimony, and interviews with the investigative team, seeking to link the reassignments to the bona fide operational needs of the agency,” the report stated. “However, our investigation developed evidence which tended to undermine the proffered explanations.”

The report suggests the reassignments were instead based on anti-gay sentiments.

Richard Trefry, a government contractor, told investigators that Bloch “spontaneously explained” his desire to “ship out” a number of gay employees. Bloch allegedly told him he “HAD A LICENSE TO DO THIS.”

Senator Lindsey ‘Lohan’ Graham (R-SC) – ‘GOP Moron of the Day’

1

Via: Dependable Renegade

“In World War II, the mentality of the public was that our whole way of life was at risk, we’re all in. We censored the mail. When you wrote a letter overseas, it got censored. When a letter was written back from the battlefield to home, they looked at what was in the letter to make sure they were not tipping off the enemy,” Graham, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, told reporters on Capitol Hill. “If I thought censoring the mail was necessary, I would suggest it, but I don’t think it is.”

What is especially galling to me is that Miss Lindsey allegedly went to law school, where he SHOULD have learned about this little thing called the Constitution. And yeah, as a member (and I use that term for its alternate definition) of the United States Congress, he took an oath to uphold this little thing called the Constitution.

But, as his savior and lord Jesus Christ George W. Bush, once said:

“The Constitution is just a piece of paper.”  “If you don’t have anything to hide…”

personal thought:

IF we hadn’t the cuts the Public Sector (teachers, first responders, etc) we’d probably be in the 6%’s range.

Romney – British reaction, “Worse than Sarah Palin” (see gif)

Via: Democratic Underground

The British reaction to Mitt Romney has gone from openness, to skepticism, to mocking, to concluding that Mitt Romney is worse than Sarah Palin.

Daily Mail Political Editor James Chapman has been providing the world a play by play of Romney’s British implosion via his Twitter account. Romney started things off by criticizing London’s preparedness for the Olympics. He then forgot the name of British Labour Leader Ed Miliband, and then he admitted that he had been given a secret briefing by MI6. This led the British to ask aloud if they have another George W. Bush (remember, him?) on their hands,

“Romney blunders again by revealing he’s had (supposedly) top secret briefing by John Sawers, MI6 boss. Do we have a new Dubya on our hands?”

After his visit to Whitehall, Chapman offered two of the kinder reviews of Mitt Romney, “Serious dismay in Whitehall at Romney debut. ‘Worse than Sarah Palin.’Total car crash’. Two of the kinder verdicts.”

Chapman also reported another verdict from British meet and greet with Mitt, “Another verdict from one Romney meeting: ‘Apparently devoid of charm, warmth, humour or sincerity’”
