Veterans Watch as Gains Their Friends Died for Are Erased by Insurgents

Via: New York Times

A few weeks before their battalion was to get new mine-resistant vehicles, Capt. Adam P. Snyder, Pvt. Dewayne L. White and Sgt. Eric J. Hernandez were speeding toward a mission in Baiji, Iraq, when a roadside bomb engulfed their Humvee in flames, killing the two enlisted men. Captain Snyder, 26, died the next day, Dec. 5, 2007.

Matthew Adkins, then a self-described “butterbar” lieutenant, regarded the captain as a mentor, and his death leveled him. Hearing this week that Baiji was on the brink of being overrun by Sunni militants, he immediately thought of Captain Snyder, phoned his girlfriend, and cried.

“You think about those costs that can never be recouped,” Mr. Adkins said in an interview from Talkeetna, Alaska, where he works as a field manager for pipeline surveys. “I remember driving those Humvees to Balad Air Base to get our new MRAPs, and thinking if we had these things two weeks ago, they’d still be alive.”

Everyone from Mr. Adkins’s Army unit, the First Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, had hard memories this week, as insurgents made their way from Mosul down what the soldiers knew as Route Tampa — the main north-south highway — past Baiji on the way to Tikrit and other cities closer to Baghdad. From late 2007 until the end of 2008, the battalion had safeguarded the huge refinery at Baiji, often described as the most valuable asset in the country’s three heavily Sunni provinces in the north.

About 800 American troops lost their lives, and many more were wounded, in those territories, the homeland of Saddam Hussein and his Baathist loyalists. For the comrades of those fallen troops, the grim news this week has left them struggling to reconcile the sacrifices that were made with the speed and magnitude with which northern Iraq is falling to insurgents.

Perhaps the young soldiers can ask their Fathers and Uncles how they felt on April 29, 1975 when the saw  photos of U.S. helicopters lifting off the roof of the U.S. Embassy in Saigon.

Note worth remembering: President Johnson lied to the American people about the Gulf of Tonkin, and President George W. Bush lied to the American people about WMD’s.

If you need someone to blame, start with LBJ and Bush.

‘Photo of the Day’

Please stop looking down on the homeless, because they could in fact be veterans; they should be treated with respect.

‘the dick’ Cheney

personal thought:

I was never a ‘fan’ of Robert McNamara, but I do admire his COURAGE when he finally admitted the Vietnam War was wrong.

So, fuck you Cheney!

John ‘Old Man Yells at Cloud’ McCain (R-AZ) – ‘GOP Moron of the Day’

Via: Think Progress

“But to be honest with you, Neil, it goes back to there’s a lot of ill will towards Senator Hagel because when he was a Republican, he attacked President Bush mercilessly and say he was the worst President since Herbert Hoover and said the surge was the worst blunder since the Vietnam War, which was nonsense. He was anti-his own party and people — people don’t forget that. You can disagree but if you’re disagreeable (Hey Old Man, that’s one of the reasons Obama kicked you ass in ’08!), then people don’t forget that.”

John McCain

personal thoughts:

1. There is NO question, George W. Bush WAS the worse President since Hoover.

2. It’s NOT NONSENSE that the War in Iraq is the worse blunder since the War in Vietnam.

3. McCain is, and has been for a very long time, a crazy old man (see photo).

(1 of 2) Pat Buchanan: Occupy Wall Street Is ‘Going To End Very, Very Badly’

Via: Huffington Post

Pat Buchanan issued a stern warning to Occupy Wall Street this weekend.

In a round-table discussion on ‘The McLaughlin Group’, host John McLaughlin asked panelists about the future of the movement.

“It’s going to end very, very badly with these folks in the WINTER and they’re not going to be getting publicity and they’re going to be acting up and acting badly like the worst of the demonstrators in the 60s,” Buchanan said. “They’re going to start fighting with the cops.”

He was the first adviser hired by Nixon’s presidential campaign;[ he worked primarily as an opposition researcher. For his speeches aimed at dedicated supporters, he was soon nicknamed “Mr. Inside.”

When Nixon took the Oval Office in 1969, Buchanan worked as a White House adviser and speechwriter for Nixon and vice president Spiro Agnew.

Buchanan coined the phrase “Silent Majority” (now known as the ‘Tea Party”).

personal thought:

Buchanan was WRONG about the Civil Rights movement; he was WRONG about the anti-Vietnam War protestors; and he is WRONG about “Occupy”.

Santorum: what does McCain know about torture?

Via: Salon

John McCain has been on something of a crusade this week on the question of how we found Osama bin Laden, giving speeches and writing Op-Eds outlining his position that it was not torture of detainees that led the U.S. to its man.

Now comes presidential candidate and “enhanced interrogation” supporter Rick Santorum arguing on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show that McCain simply “doesn’t understand how enhanced interrogation works.”

Yes, he’s talking about the same John McCain who, in his FIVE and a HALF years as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam, was  interrogated during a PROGRAM of BEATINGS and TOTURE.

my thoughts:

I’m sure Santourm is now going to try to ‘walk this back’, but I hope the Republicans who vote in the primaries and caucauses will not forget what he said about McCain.

I also believe, Santourm has to be one of the dumbest bastards who EVER seeked the office of President.
